The Franklin Elementary modernization and addition project is one part of the voter-approved 2015 facilities improvement bond. Three community design open houses gave neighbors, parents and staff a chance to have a voice in the design of the new building.
The new Franklin features a thoughtful restoration of the original 1909 building, plus an addition that is meant to complement the existing design features. The new school will be larger by 36,000 square feet, making it able to accommodate current educational programs as well as future growth or option program expansion.
A popular feature of the new building is the stage, multi-purpose room and gym that will provide much needed space for programs and performances. Additional parking, as well as dedicated drop-off areas for buses and parents, should help keep neighborhood traffic to a minimum.
Construction is scheduled to start in June 2017 with a completion date of December 2018. During construction, Franklin students and staff will attend “Camp Franklin” in the old Jefferson Elementary building on Grand Boulevard at 37th Avenue.
