Fitness & Health Course Descriptions
The course description describes the big ideas of the course.
Kindergarten Fitness & Health
Students recognize basic facts and concepts about their body and develop fundamental movement patterns. Students also learn to work safely in group and individual movement settings, respect others, and follow safety and responsibility rules.
1st Grade Fitness & Health
Students learn and refine loco motor skills and further develop fundamental non-loco motor and manipulative skills within activities. Students continue to learn rules and procedures for simple games and apply safety practices associated with physical activities. First grade students also begin to understand how their decisions impact their health and wellness, now and in the future.
2nd Grade Fitness & Health
Students learn to demonstrate key elements of fundamental movement skills and mature form in loco motor skills. Students learn to workin a group and demonstrate socially responsible behavior. Second grade students also begin to learn about the structures and functions of body systems.
3rd Grade Fitness & Health
Students begin to demonstrate mature form in fundamental loco motor and manipulative skills and can often maintain that form while participating in dynamic game situations. Students refine, vary, and combine skills in complex situations. They also begin to develop their fitness knowledge and can relate regular physical activity to fitness benefits. Students begin to learn game strategies, rules, and etiquette. Third grade students also learn about their body systems and how their health decisions impact growth and development.
4th Grade Fitness & Health
Students learn to identify the components of health-related physical fitness. Students make continuous progress across all fundamental motor patterns and become proficient in movement patterns, combining these in increasingly complex activity situations. Students in fourth grade learn and apply health skills in the areas of disease prevention, nutrition and body systems. Students also begin to set goals to monitor and improve their fitness progress.
5th Grade Fitness & Health
Students apply motor skills and movement concepts to enhance performance, personal fitness, and game strategy and tactics. Students can demonstrate skills alone, with partners, and in small-group and large-group situations. Students are taught to maintain healthy body systems and prevent disease. Emphasis at this grade level is placed on demonstrating interpersonal skills, assuming responsibility for personal health habits, and practicing behaviors that promote active and healthy lifestyles.
6th Grade Fitness & Health
Students combine movement skills into complex movement forms in a variety of activities. Cooperative and competitive games are appropriate,with an emphasis on developing skills and tactical understanding. Students use feedback to initiate and maintain practice to improve skill performance and also set goals to improve their development. Sixth grade students are able to identify and seek opportunities to participate in regular physical activity at school and outside the school environment. Students continue to develop understanding regarding health issues, body structure and function, and how choices affect their lifetime fitness. Students can also demonstrate injury prevention.

Students continue to develop competence in modified versions of various games and recreational activities. They can apply similar concepts from one sport or movement setting to another. Students demonstrate decision-making skills, conflict-resolution skills, appropriate etiquette, and respect for others. Students achieve and maintain personal fitness standards and set reasonable and appropriate goals for improvement or maintenance of health-related fitness. Students learn to refine their critical-thinking skills to avoid unsafe situations, analyze health information and products, and maintain healthy relationships. Students exhibit a healthy lifestyle, interpret health information, and promote good health.
Students demonstrate competence in skillful movement in modified game situations and recreational activities. They transition from modified versions of movement forms to more complex applications across all types of activities. Students are able to set goals, track progress, and participate in the activities to improve health-related fitness. They begin to relate short and long-term consequences of health choices and apply health skills to specific personal, family, and community health concerns. Students learn to refine critical-thinking skills to avoid unsafe situations, analyze health information and products, and maintain healthy relationships. Students begin to investigate health in the broader context of community.

Students complete the transition from modified versions of movement forms to more complex applications across all types of physical activities. Students demonstrate more specialized knowledge in identifying and applying key movement motor skills and movement concepts. They assess their skill performance and develop a personal health and fitness plan. Students demonstrate the ability to plan for and improve components of health-related fitness to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of personal fitness.
Students are proficient in fundamental movement skills and skill combinations and understand and apply key movement and fitness concepts for lifetime activities in which they demonstrate competence. Students respect others and anticipate and avoid unsafe physical activity situations. They develop the ability to understand and anticipate how physical activity interests and abilities change across a lifetime. Students demonstrate competency to plan, implement, self-assess, and modify a personal health and fitness plan. Students are prepared to lead aphysically active lifestyle and practice health-enhancing behaviors that promote wellness throughout life.
