What makes a PDF “ADA Compliant”?
Generally an accessible Word document translates to an accessible PDF.
Some of the features of an ADA compliant PDF include:
- Searchable text (Note: PDFs created by scanning may actually be an image and not searchable text.)
- Images with Alt text is hidden text used to describe an image to one visually impaired.
- Bookmarks for documents over 9 pages
- Add tags
- Logical reading order (left-to-right) in tables
- Defined table rows/columns that don’t split across pages
- Leave out background images or watermarks
To learn more about your document's level of accessiblity, run the Accessibility Checker within Word 2016. To find the checker, search for "Accessibility" within the "Tell me what you want to do..." search window. Once the file has been checked and all errors are fixed, a PDF is then usually accessible. Best practice also requires running the PDF checker and making edits within Adobe's Acrobat before posting a PDF to a website.
