ICAN Program

What is the ICAN Program?

  • Middle School ICAN program provides online course recovery for students to gain skills necessary for promotion to the next grade level.
  • High School ICANprogram provides online credit retrieval to help students meet on-time graduation goals.

What Is An ICAN Course?

Middle school iCAN Learning Lab interventions use web-based SVL courses to address specific gaps in a student’s learning as identified by the classroom teacher. Content teachers will help students close these learning gaps enabling the student to be once again successful in the classroom. In most cases the Middle School ICAN Learning Lab intervention takes 2 to 6 weeks.

How Are ICAN Students Supported?

  • ICAN students have classtime scheduled with an ICAN classroom teacher who is their educational and personal support advocate.
  • ICAN students work with online teachers who are their academic content specialist.
  • ICAN students can access their coursework from a computer anytime, any place.
  • ICAN student progress and teacher contact is tracked in an electronic system to make sure the student's teachers and counselors know how to best support the student.

Where Do Students Register For ICAN Courses?

Students are either referred the Middle School ICAN Learning Lab support class by their English or math teachers. They may also self-refer through their teachers or counselors. Students will be enrolled right away or, if the class is full, when a space opens. Middle School ICAN Learning Lab enrollment is continual throughout the school year. As students become once again successful in their classes they will be exited from Middle School ICAN Learning Lab making room to add new students.

What Is The High School ICAN Program?

The ICAN (Individual Credit Advancement Now) program provides online credit recovery opportunities for students at their home high school, using special web-based coursework developed by Spokane Virtual Learning (SVL). ICAN classes help students meet their on-time graduation goals, and classroom times are scheduled at each Spokane Public Schools high school so that students can be assisted in person and online.

Who Is Eligible For The ICAN Program?

ICAN is for students in need of recovering a credit they previously failed.

What Is An ICAN Course?

ICAN courses are specially designed web-based SVL courses using standards based focus, which are meant to assess each student's prior content knowledge in order to guide a student through only the core learning standards they need to demonstrate mastery of the course content. On average ICAN courses take students 6-8 weeks to complete.

Students enroll for ICAN courses through their high school counselors and will be placed when a space opens. ICAN enrollment is continual throughout the school year, so as students finish their courses, new students are added. ICAN classroom times are offered during the school day or after school, depending on the school.
